Short Log Turning Blanks
Ideally, a log should be cut the same length (or a little longer) as it is in diameter in order to get the largest form possible from the log. However, sometimes you get what you get, and that means you get a log that is cut shorter than the diameter of the log. Not to fret; there are a couple of options for cutting short logs into turning blanks.

Skew Types: Rectangular vs. oval vs. round
Переглядів 39 тис.8 років тому
Occasionally, I get asked about the difference between an oval skew and a rectangular (a.k.a. flat) skew. Each type of skew has its proponents, sometimes even to the point of disparaging the other, while other turners find little difference between the two. Then there is the lesser known round skew. Where does that fit in? My goal in this video is to take an unbiased look at skews with differen...
Bedan style Parting Tool
Переглядів 73 тис.8 років тому
Some time ago, over a year ago, I hinted that I wanted to show what I have done to my unusual looking parting tools. Well I finally got around to explaining what and why I have modified my parting tools. And, of course, I included some example tasks where I often like to employ my "Bedan" style parting tools-including making captive rings!
Point Cut with a Skew
Переглядів 39 тис.8 років тому
After making a case that there are essentially only three cuts with a skew (peeling, planing, and point), I take an in-depth view at the third cut: the "point" cut. Although cutting on the long point of a skew is a bit of an odd-ball cut, as long as one takes into consideration its unusual bevel support, it is an easy and useful means of cutting across end grain in spindle work. Cover tool: 1" As...
Scraping with Gouges
Переглядів 7 тис.8 років тому
Although dedicated scraping tools have plenty of uses and have a definite place in my arsenal, scraping is not limited to just "scrapers". Any cutting tool has the potential to be used as a scraper, and gouges stand out as the cutting tool I most often scrape with. Choosing to use a cutting tool for scraping could have several motives. Perhaps there is no scraper available that can get safely i...
Roughing Out a Natrual Edge Bowl
Переглядів 22 тис.8 років тому
The Apple tree I recently dissected did not go along with my plan. I was planning a couple other videos before I go back to the task of roughing out the half-logs into bowls. The Anchor-seal bought me some time, but one of the pieces started to crack. Time to get busy roughing, starting with a piece that are destined to be natural-edge bowl.
Tool Handle Length
Переглядів 35 тис.8 років тому
Long tool handles always look really cool, but are long handles necessary? or are short handles more appropriate? Is there some criteria for determining minimum tool handle length? If you have watched a few of my videos in the past, you probably noticed that some of my tool handles are quite long, while others (like the ones on my skews) are quite short. Find out how I decide how long a tool ha...
No Bandsaw? No Problem!
Переглядів 133 тис.8 років тому
Most woodturners will cut half-logs into rounds on the bandsaw before mounting it onto the lathe, and for production turners the time saved in doing so is a must-and the money saved would even pay for bandsaw. But for the hobbyists who cannot afford the space or budget for a bandsaw, that should not keep you from taking advantage of all the free wood from local trees that are cut down. See how ...
Dissecting a Tree
Переглядів 37 тис.8 років тому
I recently acquired a small Apple tree that I cut into a bunch of bowl blanks. When I get green wood, I like to cut it into blanks as soon as possible, so I could not afford to stop and setup the cameras right then. Once I had the blanks cut and sealed, however, I reassembled the thee on my workbench so that I could share my process of dissecting the tree into blanks. If you have never cut logs...

President's Challenge, Dec. 2015
Переглядів 5 тис.8 років тому
Although I could have played it safe by doing one of the kinds of holiday ornaments I have done many times before, for the final President's Challenge in 2015 I sought out something new and challenging by turning a multi-axis snowman ornament with a tilted hat. The most challenging part was figuring out how to make this ornament without the use of an expensive, specialty chuck. The idea for the...
President's Challenge, November 2015
Переглядів 10 тис.8 років тому
This month's President's Challenge has given me an excuse to get back to a project that has been sitting on the shelf for several months. Although scoops and spoons can be fun and useful to make, the idea in this project is to make a scoop that has the accurate volume of a measuring spoon to make it even more useful in the kitchen. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, perhaps this is even ...
Negative Rake Scraping
Переглядів 88 тис.8 років тому
Negative Rake Scrapers are low risk tools that are great for refining the final shape of your work. And although the finish they leave on the work is not quite as clean as shear scraping, it is often clean enough to start sanding with 150 or 180 grit. They are low risk because, unlike when conventional scraping, they are "neutral" in the sense that very little energy transfers from the work to ...
President's Challenge, Oct. 2015
Переглядів 12 тис.8 років тому
This was by far the most difficult topic for which to come up with a President's Challenge video: "Purely Sculptural", specifically something that has "no real or perceived use." I finally managed to come up with something by borrowing a method from a turner named David Reed Smith and applying it to a form of therming. Along the way, I could not help but discover some practical uses for the tec...
Shear Scraping
Переглядів 31 тис.8 років тому
See how, after trying with our best efforts with cutting tools and Conventional Scraping, Shear Scraping can discipline the most recalcitrant grain. It can leave a smooth, tear-out free finish on spalted wood, knots, and end-grain blowing out on side grain. Last but not least, it safely cleans up end grain in face work, making it ideal for refining the outside of bowl to minimize the need for s...

As I am new to turning this is the best explanation and examples of how to use the skew. Your marking the tool to show how and where the tool works is really excellent as it enables us to actually understand and follow . Many thanks Brian greatly appreciated.

Wow, that's much faster than my carbide rougher. The peeling cut strikes me as how you would use the skew if you knew nothing about it. It just seems more stable than the other cuts. I may have to buy a skew after this.

How do you measure turning tools? Example when you say half-inch spindle gouge, where do they get the half-inch at the bevel? at the flute? where?

  • @maxgarcia7056

FYI Regarding kits. Some college woodworking classes require students to supply their own tools. So beginners sometimes have no choice but to buy kits. Then the first couple weeks time is used in sharpening the new tools. Part of learning.

Great design. I've got a piece of sugar maple of similar size ready for the second turning so your video is really timely and helpful on design and technique. Please tell me what the finished dimensions are, including the thickness of the rim, sides, and bottom, and proportion of foot to top (looks like around the typical one third). It would really help. Thanks.

You´re right, sets often include tools you don´t use or a different size than you´d prefer but as a beginner you don´t know what you want, you don´t know what you need and you don´t even know your preferences. It´s ineviteble that you´re going to buy some tools you think would be useful but in the end they will just collect dust. For me, the roughing gouge would be the 4th tool after the spindle gouge, the parting tool and the skew. With my roughing gouge I can remove a lot of material without dulling the tools for the finer work. That way it saves me a lot of time and my other tools will last longer. Since I have a Neuhammer roughing gouge which isn´t as deep as the usual ones, it´s way more versitaile. It´s more or less just a giant spindle gouge. What tools you need always depends on what you want to make. I have made some bowls but I mainly turn parts for furniture and small boxes. Furniture parts were the reason why I bought a lathe in the first place and that´s about 90% of what I use the lathe for.

*_I finally got it!_* Your demo of where the bevel contacts (at 3:55) was a real "the light bulb went on" moment for me. I have gotten "ok" with the peeling and planing cuts but could not get the point cut. Just thinking about making a point cut caused my skew to fly across the room. After watching your video, I went to the lathe and put 4 beautiful V grooves in a scrap piece of wood. I almost broke down and cried. Ok, not really... but it was an exciting moment for me. I guess I'll have to keep my skew sharp and buy a dedicated paint can opener now.
